A Canadian Christmas Traditional, Arr. Vince Gassi (ON) Alfred Publishing Level 2
This work features traditional Canadian carols. It opens with the joyous strains of "Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant (He is Born, The Divine Child)" and continues with a plaintive and modal setting of "Noël Nouvelet (Sing We Now of Christmas)." "The Huron Carol ('Twas In the Moon of Wintertime)" is then presented with remnants of "Noël Nouvelet" woven in. The conclusion develops brief dialogue between "Good King Wenceslas" and "Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant" and brings the work to its close.
It Came Upon A Midnight Clear Traditional, Arr. Christian Overton (ON) Clovertone Music Medium
This mellow, brass forward, modern sounding arrangement of It Came Upon a Midnight Clear is set with an easy straight 8ths feel with a quarter note equal to 120 bpm. It opens with a trumpet solo, and carries through with lots of brass choir writing and throaty reeds.

Cette pièce met en vedette des cantiques de Noël traditionnellement canadiens. On y retrouve Il est né, le divin enfant au tout début, suivi d’un arrangement plaintif et modal de la chanson Noël Nouvelet. The Huron Carol (‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime) est ensuite présenté avec quelques références à Noël Nouvelet. La conclusion se développe avec un bref dialogue entre Good King Wenceslas et Il est né le divin enfant, avant d’arriver à sa fin.
It Came Upon A Midnight Clear Traditionnel, Arr. Christian Overton (ON) Clovertone Music Moyen
Cet arrangement doux et moderne à base de cuivres de la pièce It Came Upon a Midnight Clear débute avec un feel de straight 8ths, au tempo de noire à 120bpm. Le début met en vedette un solo de trompette, ensuite continue avec beaucoup d’écriture de chorale de cuivres et des bois rauques.

This collection of simple carols allows for the range and technical requirements of less experienced players, while still providing interesting melodic work throughout the ensemble. The three pieces that Marlatt has arranged in this collection are Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, We Three Kings, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
Ye Merry Gents Traditional, Arr. Ryan Meeboer (ON) Eighth Note Publishing Easy
This arrangement of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen is presented in contrasting styles. It opens slowly and mysteriously, with a steady ostinato in the low voices, with muted trumpets above, then moves into an upbeat swing with a walking bass line. In the B section, trumpets, saxes and trombones all have melodic opportunities.

Cette collection de cantiques simples a été conçue pour les musiciens et musiciennes avec moins d’expérience technique, tout en permettant du matériel mélodique intéressant à travers l’ensemble. Ye Merry Gents Traditionnel, Arr. Ryan Meeboer (ON) Eighth Note Publishing Facile
Cet arrangement de God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen nous présente deux styles contrastes. Le début est lent et mystérieux, avec un ostinato dans les voix plus graves et des trompettes à sourdine dans les voix plus aigües. La pièce se retrouve ensuite dans un swing joyeux avec une partition de walking bass. Dans la section B, les trompettes, les saxophones et les trombones ont tous la chance de jouer la mélodie.

Highway of Heroes - Robert Buckley Hal Leonard Level 3
For the October feature, we go to a higher level of difficulty and again highlight a new work by Robert Buckley. Highway of Heroes was composed to honor heroism of all kinds. This work uses rich textures and dynamic scoring, and builds to a stirring theme of hope and inner strength, and is very suitable for Remembrance Day. The inspiration for this composition came from the name of a stretch of highway that pays homage to fallen soldiers, and a recording was created in Winnipeg in May, 2019 with Captain Matthew Clark, CD, and the Royal Canadian Air Force Band.

Blue Loon - Brian Appleby Apro Easy
This very slow blues in G gives novice players an opportunity to internalize the triplet pulse needed to develop groove for this piece and future works. There is a large open space for solos, and has additional parts available for clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, tuba, and horn.

Highway of Heroes - Robert Buckley Hal Leonard Niveau 3
Notre choix du mois d’octobre est à un niveau de difficulté plus avancé et met encore en vedette une pièce par Robert Buckley. Highway of Heroes a été composé pour rendre hommage à l’héroïsme dans toutes ses facettes. Cette pièce utilise de textures riches, de l’écriture dynamique et se développe envers un thème d’espoir et de force interne; celle-ci serait très appropriée pour les cérémonies du jour du souvenir. L’inspiration pour cette composition vient du nom d’une portion de l’autoroute qui rends hommage aux soldats tombés au combat. Un enregistrement a été créé à Winnipeg en mai 2019 avec le capitaine Matthew Clark CD, et le Royal Canadian air Force Band.

Blue Loon - Brian Appleby Apro Facile
Ce blues très lent en G (Sol) donne aux musiciens débutants l’opportunité d’internaliser la pulsation du triolet afin de développer le groove de cette pièce ainsi que pour des pièces à venir. Il y a beaucoup d’espace pour des solos, avec partitions additionnelles pour clarinette, clarinette basse, flute, tuba et cor français.

Spirit of the Wolf - Stakaya & Wolf Song - Takaya Slulem Bob Baker arr. Robert Buckley (BC) Level 1.5 & 3.0 Hal Leonard
Wolf Song and Spirit of the Wolf are two arrangements of a song shared by Squamish Nation artist and performer, Bob Baker. Mr. Baker has been working with Mr. Buckley so that this song (much like Eagle Song and A Gathering of Eagles released in 2018) can be shared between Indigenous and Western cultures in the spirit of moving forward together. Both arrangements feature a the pentatonic melody in a programmatic style, and the more advanced selection includes aleatoric passages.

Summer on My Mind Tom Richards (ON) Clovertone Music Medium Easy
Summer On My Mind is a laid back original swing chart with solo openings (and written solos) for piano, bass, drums, and alto/tenor sax and a short soli sections for saxes and trombones. The ranges are friendly for developing ensembles, as is tempo at quarter note=126.

Spirit of the Wolf - Stakaya & Wolf Song - Takaya Slulem Bob Baker arr. Robert Buckley (BC) Niveau 1.5 & 3.0 Hal Leonard
Wolf Song et Spirit of the Wolf sont deux arrangements d’une chanson partagée par l’artiste et interprète de la nation Squamish, M. Bob Baker. M. Baker travaille de près avec M. Buckley afin que cette chanson (tout comme Eagle Song et A Gathering of Eagles en 2018) puisse être partagée entre les cultures autochtones et occidentales dans l’esprit d’avancer ensemble. Les deux arrangements se servent de la gamme pentatonique dans un style programmé, et la version plus avancée inclus des passages aléatoires.
