Vive la Canadienne (Hail to the Girls of Canada) - Traditional, arr. David Marlatt Level 1.0 Eigth Note Publishing
David Marlatt’s arrangement of the French Canadian folksong Vive la Canadienne was written as part of a collection of Canadian folksongs to celebrate Canada’s 150. The tune itself was a toast by oarsmen to Canadian women. In this arrangement there is some soloist writing for trumpet. This could be programmed for a beginner ensemble’s first festival experience.

Missing You - Fred Stride Sierra Medium Easy
A medium easy swing, Missing You is an alto sax feature with accessible band parts, and pretty piano ornamentation by Vancouver based Fred Stride.

L’arrangement de la chanson folklorique canadienne-française Vive la Canadienne par David Marlatt a été écrit pour faire partie d’une collection de chansons folkloriques canadiennes qui célébraient le 150e anniversaire du Canada. La pièce elle-même était un toast par les voyageurs aux femmes canadiennes. Dans cet arrangement il y a quelques sections de solo à la trompette. Cette pièce pourrait être programmée pour une première expérience de festival pour un ensemble débutant.

Un swing moyennement facile écrit par le compositeur de Vancouver Fred Stride, Missing You met en vedette le saxophone alto avec un accompagnement accessible du reste de l’ensemble et une belle partition ornée de piano.

A Cambridge Carol - Traditional, arr. Vince Gassi Level 2.0 Alfred Publishing
This setting of the English carol Ding Dong Merrily on High begins as a march with flute and snare drum before opening in to brass choir and full band. Over the course of the piece, most sections of the ensemble are given some melodic work, in the case of the lower voices, after the piece modulates. The arrangement is upbeat, cheery, and accessible.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - Traditional, arr. Christian Overton Clovertone Medium Easy
Christian Overton’s treatment of this traditional carol begins with a chorale, but soon moves into trading solos, interesting bassline figures, and a 40’s style jump swing style. Accessible ranges, quarter note =180.

A Cambridge Carol - Traditionnel, arr. Vince Gassi Niveau 2.0 Alfred Publishing
Cet arrangement du cantique anglais Ding Dong Merrily on High débute dans le style d’une marche avec flute et caisse claire avant de passer le flambeau à la chorale de cuivres et enfin à toute l’harmonie. Au courant de la pièce, la plupart des sections de l’ensemble auront à jouer le matériel mélodique; dans le cas des voix graves, ceci se passe après la modulation. L’arrangement est enjoué, joyeux et accessible.

L’arrangement de ce cantique traditionnel débute avec une chorale mais Christian Overton y apporte sa propre touche avec des solistes en conversation, des figures intéressantes à la basse et un style de jump swing des années 40.

Song of Hope - Peter Meechan Level 3.0 Meechan Music
October’s feature is “A Song of Hope” by recently Canadian composer Peter Meechan. The piece was originally part of his cornet concerto, Milestone. It has been rewritten and dedicated Ryan Anthony and his charitable organization “Cancer Blows”, and rescored for concert band. It is a very mature and exposed work, but is beautiful and haunting and reflects looking toward the better directions of the future. It would also be suitable Remembrance day selection.

Brouhaha - Les Sabina Kendor Easy
Brouhaha was written for standard jazz ensemble, but could convert for as few as 9 players, and has optional parts for flute, clarinet, French horn, tuba, and vibes. It is a groove focused rock chart that has solo space for the tenor sax, and ends in a shout chorus.

Song of Hope - Peter Meechan Niveau 3.0 Meechan Music
Le choix du mois d’octobre s’intitule A Song of Hope, une pièce écrite par le compositeur nouvellement canadien, Peter Meechan. Cette pièce faisait originalement partie de son concerto de cornet, Milestone. La pièce a été réécrite et réorchestrée, ensuite dédiée à Ryan Anthony et son organisme de bienfaisance Cancer Blows. C’est un œuvre très mature avec des sections exposées, une belle chanson à caractère obsédant. Celle-ci nous invite à jeter un regard envers un avenir plus prometteur. Cette pièce serait aussi un bon choix de répertoire pour les cérémonies du jour du souvenir.

Brouhaha - Les Sabina Kendor Facile
La pièce Brouhaha a été écrite pour un ensemble de jazz standard mais pourrait facilement se jouer avec 9 musiciens/ennes. Il y a des partitions optionnelles pour flute, clarinette, cor français, tuba et vibraphone. C’est une pièce du style rock groove avec solo de saxophone ténor et un shout chorus à la fin.

Eagle Song and The Gathering of Eagles - Bob Baker/Robert Buckley Level 1.5 & 3.0 Hal Leonard
- Bob Baker (S7aplek) of the Squamish Nation; Re-imagined by Robert Buckley
Eagle Song and The Gathering of Eagles are two pieces based on a song given by the ancestors to Squamish Nation cultural advisor Bob Baker (S7aplek) and now, re-imagined for two grade levels of concert band by Robert Buckley.
This work is a collaborative effort initiated by Douglas Macaulay who brought together Bob Baker and Robert Buckley to help build a shared path forward for First Nations peoples and the wider community through music. These two works will allow concert band
musicians to experience a small part of the rich heritage of First Nations people.
In the Squamish language, music and medicine are the same word and music is considered a sacred, healing gift. After Mr. Baker received the song, there was a process within the Squamish community to determine if it might belong to someone else. When it was clear that it did not, he began to build the song into its current form. When approached by Doug Macaulay to partner with the West Vancouver Youth Band to create something that could be shared more widely, Mr. Baker enthusiastically agreed and worked with Robert Buckley who reimagined his song for concert band.
This reimagining will allow Canadian bands to share, perform and discuss the music and it’s origin. The Gather Of Eagles and Eagle Song are just the beginning. Two more songs will be reimagined over the next two years and when performed together, these could form a three movement "Squamish Symphony”.

Niobe - Vince Gassi Belwin Easy
Niobe is an original bossa nova with a straight-eighth feel, scored with an easy, catchy melody and available written solos for 1st tenor and 1st trombone. The ranges are accessible, with first trumpet up to written (fourth space) E and a tempo of 144 BPM.

Eagle Song et The Gathering of Eagles - Bob Baker/Robert Buckley Niveau 1.5 & 3.0 Hal Leonard

Eagle Song et The Gathering of Eagles sont deux pièces basées sur une chanson transmise au conseiller culturel de la nation Squamish Bob Baker (S7aplek) par les ancêtres et maintenant ré-imaginé pour 2 différents niveaux d’harmonie par Robert Buckley.
Ces oeuvres démontrent la collaboration entre Bob Baker et Robert Buckley, grâce à un effort initié par Douglas Macaulay, à construire ensemble un partenariat entre les peuples des premières nations et la communauté élargie à travers la musique. Ces deux pièces permettront aux musiciens de faire l’expérience d’une petite partie du riche héritage des peuples des premières nations.
Dans la langue Squamish, la musique et la médecine se partage le même mot et la musique est considérée un cadeau sacré de guérison. Lorsque M. Baker reçu la chanson, il y eu un processus dans la communauté Squamish afin de déterminer si celle-ci appartenait à quelqu’un d’autre. Ceci n’était pas le cas donc il a commencé à construire la pièce dans sa forme actuelle. Lorsque Douglas Macaulay l’a approché pour collaborer avec le West Vancouver Youth Band afin de créer une pièce qui pouvait être partagé à plus grande échelle, M. Baker a accepté avec enthousiasme et a travaillé avec Robert Buckley qui ré-imagina la pièce pour harmonie.
Cette ré-imagination permettra aux harmonies canadiennes de partager, de performer et de discuter de cette musique et ses origines. Mais ces deux pièces, soit Eagle Song et The Gathering of Eagles, ne sont que le début de cette collaboration. Deux autres pièces seront ré-imaginées pendant les deux prochaines années, et, lorsqu’elles seront performées ensemble, pourront créer une suite à trois mouvements, « Squamish Symphony ».

Niobe - Vince Gassi Belwin Facile
Niobe est une pièce originale au style de bossa nova avec un feel de croches non swingées, une mélodie entraînante et des solos écrits pour saxophone ténor 1 et trombone 1. L’étendue des notes est accessible, avec la partition de trompette 1 qui monte jusqu’au Mi/E de la 4e espace et un tempo de 144bpm.
